Skandha Shasti 2024
6-day celebration for
Lord Muruga/Subramanya/Karthikeya
Friday, Nov 1st to Wednesday, Nov 6th, 2024
Soora Samharam on Wednesday, Nov 6th (7:00pm)
The Significance of Skandha Shasti and Soora Samharam
Skandha Shasti commemorates the destruction of evil by the Lord Muruga, son of Shiva & Parvathi, and is celebrated with the dramatic enactment of Soora Samharam.
Lord Muruga engaged the armies of Simhamukha, Soorapadman and Tarakasura on a six day battle and vanquished all of them on the sixth day. The sixth day (Shasti) of the waxing moon in the month of Ashada (Oct/Nov) is celebrated as Skandha Shasti. Corresponding to the six days of the war over evil forces, devotees undertake fasts, prayers and devotional singing to Lord Muruga.
Skandha Shasti sparks the energy of Lord Karthikeya.
Special Subramanya Kalasa Puja will be performed at the temple in the morning. The celebrations will also include rituals for Boghar Siddhar, one of the 18 yoga Siddhas and an alchemist, who made the Navapashana idol of the presiding deity, Lord Muruga, in Palani temple.
